Borneo Trip Report

June 25, 2017

Hi all.   I have finally finished a long trip report for the two weeks we spent in Sabah in March and April.  Despite lots of rain, it was a fantastic trip.   We didn’t end up seeing a Clouded Leopard but we saw lots of other great wildlife.

We saw 36 mammals including Borneo Pygmy Elephants, Orangutan, Whitehead’s Pygmy Squirrel, Marbled Cat, Otter Civet, Slow Loris and more.

Below is a link to day 1.  To view the other days, just click on the links in the Trip Report Archive applet on the right side for April 2017.

November 29, 2015

Greetings everyone, I have four small mammals (two tree shrews, a squirrel and a rat species) that I could use some help with. These photos were all taken in July during our recent trip to Borneo. Trip report to follow! Thank you in advance and thanks again to Jon for allowing me/us to post here. John Van Niel

Bat ID help – Danum Valley, Sabah

November 12, 2015

On a recent visit to the wonderful Danum Valley in Sabah (Malaysian Borneo), I came across this bat while walking a trail in the early morning. I only noticed it as the bat flew in and landed in this position, and I was able to get a few photos. Not sure of the ID so any help appreciated!

Sunda Clouded Leopard filmed up close in Danum Valley

Sunda Clouded Leopard filmed up close in Danum Valley

One of the world’s most rare and elusive cats, the Sunda clouded leopard of Malaysia, has been filmed up close.

A biologist holidaying in Malaysia has captured unique footage of a young female leopard resting in the forest.

Previously, this top predator has only been filmed fleetingly and at a distance, with the first wild footage to be made public captured in 2010.

The Sunda clouded leopard was only discovered to be a distinct species in 2007.

Interestingly enough I have been reading up on that area recently and would be interested in visiting at some point (maybe late next year or in 2014). So if anyone else is interested in getting together for a trip there let me know! 🙂
