Otter vs Gator

April 30, 2014

We’ve barely recovered from the snake-eats-croc photos, and now this: Photos reveal a river otter in Florida attacking a young alligator, which it then ripped into for lunch. The photos, shot in 2011 in Florida’s Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge by a visitor named Geoff Walsh, were posted this week on the refuge’s Facebook page. Our favorite reptile expert, Terry Phillip, had this initial reaction: “Man, that’s a bold and hungry otter! Very cool.” See here for more details…

“Extinct” deer rediscovered in Vietnam

Roosevelt’s barking deer, or Roosevelt’s muntjac, was first discovered in 1929 by the sons of President Theodore Roosevelt, Theodore Jnr and Kermit Roosevelt, in Lao. After that, the animal had never been seen alive again anywhere in the world until a camera trap in Vietnam photographed two of the deer deep in the forest earlier this year, 85 years after its last sighting. Snow Leopard Trip – October 2014: any interest in joining?

April 27, 2014

Hi, I’ve decided (finally) to go look for Snow Leopards in Hemis National Park, India and am putting together a small group of people (no more than 6). Provisional dates are October 3 – 17 or thereabouts, and target species are Snow Leopard, Blue Sheep, Eurasian Lynx, Mountain Weasel, Woolly Hare, Urial and Argali.

The cost of a 2 week trip is likely to cost a bit less than $2000 per person (not including flights).

Please let me know if you are interested here or mail me at jon@mammalwatching.com
