New Trip Reports Scotland and Finland

Finland 2009: Derek Shingles, 2 weeks and 7 species including a Saimaa Ringed Seal and Raccoon Dogs.

Nice to hear that you was satisfy of seeing Saimaa ringed seal. They are hard to spot, but Linnansaari National Park is the best place to catch them.
Couple tips for others who like to see the Saimaa seal: Take the taksi boat from Rantasalmi (harbour is in small place called Porosalmi, 9km north of the center of Rantasalmi) and tell the boat captain (Jari Heiskanen, phone 358405560119, speaks excellent german and good english, very helpfull man and has wonderfull stories about the region) you want to see the seal. He has lived there all his life and he spend so much time on the lake area that if he don’t find any seal to you, no one else could do that better.
About other animals: in Finland it is allowed to shoot almost everything, including bears, wolfs, lynxes, beavers, badgers, martins, weasels, etc. That’s why the animals are very shy and they often are visible only at night time. And that is why they get hit by the car so easly, unfortunately.
